The volunteers are the "heart beat" of Agape Ministry, Inc. Each volunteer makes a 2 hour commitment minimum once a week in the area they prefer to work in. An example would be Norm works in the Food Pantry bagging up groceries or stocking every Tuesday from 1:30 to 3:15 PM, Sandra works sorting and handing out clothes every Wednesday from 9:30 - 11: AM, etc. Agape is currently open 5 days a week with one full day and four half days. With enough volunteers making a two hour commitment one day a week the managers can schedule and "plug" volunteers into all the different positions available to cover all the shifts. Some people may volunteer to do two shifts a week or more. That is appreciated but not expected and Agape thrives on the two hour commitment. At Agape we are very flexible and understand that volunteers are graciously volunteering their time. We understand people may like to travel at certain times of the year, take a vacation, or may get sick or have any number of reasons they will need to be gone at times. All we ask is if its planned you sign the sign out log a week or two in advance or unplanned you make a courtesy call. We appreciate our volunteers and know there will be those times! At present we have approximately 90 volunteers filling 6 shifts and covering 4 categories (Records/ Phone, Interviewers, Clothing, and Pantry) weekly.
There is one exception to the "two hour commitment" and that is our thrift shop, "The Fig Leaf". The Fig Leaf is open from 10 AM - 2 PM Monday through Saturday. If you like working a cash register, sorting clothes, working in retail, that could be a niche for you. Even at "The Fig" we have a couple of volunteers who work a 2 hour shift and will consider that. We sell gently used clothing and household goods at the Fig and it is similar to a Goodwill store.
If you are interested in volunteering at Agape the best thing to do is call and make an appointment to come in and look around and talk to the manager on duty and the other volunteers and "get a feel" for what we do! We appreciate your interest and love having you stop in with "no strings attached". You can always try an area and if you find out it's not for you and want to try something else we will work with you! The volunteers at Agape continually state how much they like volunteering here and how "fulfilling" it is. We are like a family and there are many friendships formed here as well. Agape is also a fun place to volunteer, we like to have a little fun along the way! Come on in and see what it's all about and we look forward to meeting you!
